Loss Control Department
The Loss Control Department of Workforce Safety & Insurance (WSI) believes that every ND employee
deserves a safe work environment and every employer deserves to have healthy employees on the job.
That’s why WSI is dedicated to “Putting Safety to Work”, ultimately making North Dakota workplaces
some of the safest in the nation. WSI believes this is possible through loss control consultations,
education and training, safety incentive programs, safety grants and continual focus on safety by
employers and employees. WSI is committed to helping employers and employees recognize and correct
safety hazards so that workplace injuries can be prevented. It is a goal of WSI to partner with
employers and employees to help prevent the hardships associated with workplace injuries on workers
and their families.
The Loss Control Department wants to let you know about the WSI Safety Incentive Programs available to North Dakota Employers!
Severe injury rates in North Dakota have declined 47% since 1995 and to ensure this trend continues,
Workforce Safety & Insurance (WSI) is offering safety grant and safety discount programs aimed at
further reducing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries. WSI continues “Putting Safety to Work”
by encouraging employers to implement one or more of these safety programs at their workplace. These
programs can reduce a qualifying employer’s premium by up to 25%. Matching grants can also be obtained to
assist in purchasing safety interventions that eliminate or reduce workplace hazards. In addition,
associations and employee organizations may qualify for grants to help promote safety through training and
education.
WSI is offering two safety incentive programs in which employers can participate in either one or in both at the same time.
These programs offer employers the flexibility to choose which programs will be most beneficial for them.
The Safety Management Program (SMP) is designed to assist employers in developing or improving
current safety management systems. A WSI Safety Consultant will conduct an assessment based on the
SMP requirements and develop plans to assist employers in making improvements. Employers who successfully
participate in WSI’s Safety Management Program can receive a premium discount of 10%.
The Safety Action Menu program is designed to provide employers with options to implement safety improvement programs.
The employer has the option choosing the programs that will be most beneficial. Employers can receive a 15% premium
discount by choosing to participate in a variety of (SAM) items that can each provide a 5% discount up to a maximum of 15%.
Employers are encouraged to enroll in both the Safety Management Program and Safety Action Menu as both discounts of each program
can be combined in the same premium period for a maximum discount of 25%. Please note that employers, who wish to enroll in our
SMP and SAM, must submit an application before the beginning of their premium period.

Approximately 35% of all claims filed can be traced back to poor ergonomics.
What typically begins as minor aches or pains, if ignored, has potential to develop
into costly claims. This proactive program offers employers resources and financial
assistance to help in reducing or eliminating cumulative-type injuries at the workplace.
